Family, friends, and members of the Lincolnton community are mourning the tragic and heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Austin Shyjuan Washington of Lincolnton, who lost his life following a devastating drowning incident at Lake James near Linville Dam in Burke County on Saturday evening.
According to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, the tragic incident unfolded on Saturday, June 13, after emergency dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 6:30 p.m. reporting that an individual had entered the water near the rock face located west of the Duke Energy water intake area near Linville Dam and failed to resurface.
The emergency quickly prompted a large-scale search and rescue response involving water rescue crews from more than a dozen agencies, all working urgently in an effort to locate the missing teen. Rescue personnel searched the area for several hours before finally locating Austin in the water shortly after 9:00 p.m. Sadly, despite the extensive efforts made by first responders, he was recovered deceased from the lake.
Authorities officially identified the victim on Monday as Austin Shyjuan Washington of Lincolnton. Investigators have stated that no foul play is suspected, and the incident is currently being treated as a tragic accidental drowning.
As news of Austin’s passing spread, an outpouring of grief and support began pouring in from loved ones and community members struggling to process the devastating loss of a young life gone far too soon.
In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe fundraiser titled “Honoring Austin: A Brother and Friend Forever” was created by close friend Skye Jones to assist Austin’s family with funeral arrangements, memorial services, and cremation expenses during this incredibly difficult time.
As of Monday morning, the fundraiser had already raised more than $1,700 toward its $4,500 goal, showing just how deeply Austin was loved by those around him.
Austin’s sudden passing leaves behind grieving family members, close friends, and a community now united in remembering a young man whose life ended far too soon, but whose memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
