Authorities have identified the man killed in a weekend shooting at Rocky Butte Park as 20-year-old Alberto Ramos-Velazquez of Salem, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
Officers from the bureau’s East Precinct responded at approximately 3:29 a.m. Saturday to reports of gunfire at Rocky Butte Park along Northeast Rocky Butte Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but Ramos-Velazquez was pronounced dead before he could be transported for further treatment.
The Portland Police Bureau’s Homicide Unit immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Detectives initially detained a man near the scene for questioning; however, he was later released, and no arrests had been announced as of Monday.
Authorities temporarily closed Northeast Rocky Butte Road at both entrances to the park while investigators processed evidence, interviewed witnesses, and secured the area. Residents living nearby were escorted to and from their homes during the closure.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and believe there may be additional witnesses who left the area before officers arrived. Detectives are urging anyone with information to contact the Portland Police Bureau to assist with the ongoing investigation.
